Safe in Harm’s Way Debuts Anthology During Domestic Violence Awareness Month

KANSAS CITY, MOResources for domestic violence victims in the U.S. are dwindling, leaving on average 40 percent of victims who call designated hotlines without answers or assistance. This sad reality was the inspiration for “Agents of Social Change: Shifting & Eradicating the Inequities Plaguing Our World Today,” a collaborative book revealing real-life tales of abuse survivors whose traumatic experiences fueled their desire to make change and disrupt complacency.

“This book was written for the forgotten 40 percent who need to know they are not alone,” said Caroline Markel, four-time best-selling author and CEO of Safe in Harm’s Way Foundation.

Caroline escaped her abuser in 2016 and quickly learned how it felt to be part of this statistic. After finding out that her partner was involved in an online group of men who taught others how to drug and rape their girlfriends, her heart stopped beating and she was quickly run to the hospital, only to learn that the Lee’s Summit police department and local hospital staff would not be coming to her rescue. In 2019, Caroline created Safe in Harm’s Way, an online platform and 501(c)3 Nonprofit bringing digital solutions to victims’ fingertips, such as a one-of-a-kind public database of abuser conviction records, and other validating resources through partnerships with several of the book’s contributing authors. Through collaboration with VictimsVoice for example, survivors can finally document abuse in real-time using proper court-admissible abuse and sexual assault documentation.

Each contributing author has a unique story to tell, but they have one thing in common—the drive to disrupt complacency in a society that gaslights victims and allows powerful abusers to remain unscathed.

“As a practicing psychologist, I see the power in speaking stories into existence to decrease shame and negative mental health struggles. There is immense healing in taking ownership of your story and rewriting it into a narrative that feels congruent to you. This was my framework in writing my chapter, and what I hope others can take away from this book.,” said Dr. Tony Meiners, Contributing Author and Licensed Clinical Psychologist.

Additional Contributing authors include:

  • Tracy Rector, Speaker & Education Director, PROJECT #RaiseAwareness
  • Sheri Kurdakul, CEO, VictimsVoice
  • Sybil Cummin, Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Kara Wasser, CEO & Founder, Looped Solutions
  • Hayley Lewis, Founder, I Never Chose This Life
  • Amy Impara-Gregory, Certified Conscious Leadership Consultant
  • Courtney Beth Anderson, Wellbeing Consultant
  • Kim Ring, Publicist & Founder, Ring Relations
  • Jenn Toro, CEO & Founder, Spark & Sage
  • Jessica Mccallop-Mcclellan, Founder & President, Giving Hope & Help Inc.
  • Melissa Mansfield-Anderson, Founder, A Moose-Bush

Not only is the book for anyone who is trapped in an abusive relationship, but this enlightening piece of work can also be shared with Fortune 500 executives, political leaders, and health professionals across the globe who want to help this ignored population but don’t know how.
