This downloadable PDF is designed to guide survivors of domestic violence through the steps of creating a new, private Google account and Google phone number in simple, easy-to-follow terms.
It is meant to reassure you, provide encouragement, and emphasize safety for your new life after leaving abuse.
You will be able to create a new Google Email and Google Voice account for FREE. Google Voice is a new hidden phone number that lets you make calls, send texts, and even get voicemails. When you use your Google Voice phone number the calls, texts, and voicemails DO NOT SHOW UP UNDER YOUR regular phone number, nor your address. This means that when you start dating again, you should use your Google Voice number instead of your regular cell phone for protection from someone finding out where you live. You can also give it to your abuser if you still have to communicate about custody or kids.
Let us be VERY clear. If you try to use this while still living with an abuser, there is a risk that you will be caught. Be sure to work with local advocates for help in staying safe.
This process could be for you if you are sure your abuser has no access to your email or cell phone. It is vital to remember that your safety is not guaranteed if your abuser has access to all your passwords, or your cell phone. Your safety can be compromised at any moment. Be sure to have a safety plan ready to enact at any time and to call 911 when you fear for yourself, your children or pets.
